Design Development
Location: Ordos (Kangbashi), Inner Mongolia
Client: Ai Weiwei / FAKE Design
Team: Anders Johansson, Erik Wingquist, Magnus Nilsson
Artist Ai Weiwei and his firm FAKE Design invited Testbedstudio, as one of 100 firms globally, to design a 1,000-square-meter villa for the Ordos 100 project. The selection of architects was curated by Herzog & de Meuron. Located in the newly built city of Kangbashi, Inner Mongolia, the project is part of the Jiang Yuan Cultural and Creative Industrial Park. Other invited firms included NL Architects, Sou Fujimoto, MOS, Office KGDVS, and Tham & Videgård.
Testbedstudio’s response to the brief is the "100 Room Villa." Built from solid brick and measuring 32x16 meters with an 8-meter eaves height, the house is conceptually envisioned as a massive brick perforated by voids. These cavities form 100 distinct rooms, each with its own unique identity and character such as the Red Room, Sky Room, Object Room, Monk Cell, or Junk Space.
